Noordkaap in Munich
Noordkaap in Munich
In seven cities (respectively Munich, Istanbul, Cologne, Budapest, Lisbon, Brussels and Rotterdam) a series of exhibitions will be realized, with artists producing new work on location. The participating artists are encouraged to respond to local phenomena, folk customs and current social developments. The first exhibition, titled 'Adios Holanda', can be seen at the whiteBOX, Munich.
Adios Holanda artists
Achim Mohné/ Uta Kopp: REMOTEWORDS (DE), Hans van den Ban (NL), Nada van Dalen (NL), Extrapool (NL): Anna McCarthy (UK) and Rumpeln (DE), Fabian Hesse (DE), Daan den Houter (NL), Tassilo Letzel (DE), Tirzo Martha (AN), Filippo Minelli (IT), Federico d’ Orazio (IT), Abner Preis (US) en Yvo van der Vat (NL), Ron Petrol (DE), Tim Wu and Piko Be (DE).
Through this project, Noordkaap intends to interest in the phenomenon of populism among a wide audience, especially among people who don't normally come into contact with art. Performance artist and storyteller Abner Preis for example transforms a wasteland near the whiteBOX into a superhero training camp. Tassilo Letzel takes the audience on a bicycle tour along his favorite places in the city, which are core examples of how the urban environment has changed in recent years. In the true spirit of a marathon performance, Fabian Hesse, will read aloud from Germany's Book of Civil Law, and the Dutch artist Daan den Houter invites you to be a guest at his 'regular table,' which so happens to be above average size.
Partners
Noordkaap has joined forces with local and international partners for this European project. In Munich these consist of Lothringer13_Laden, whiteBOX, and Der Verein für Spielkultur Munich, who calls upon superheroes to register Abner Preis's training camp. The independent art initiative Extrapool from Nijmegen (NL) joins Noordkaap on their European tour, producing radio plays on the spot with local artists as part of their series Audiotoop. Extrapool also launches a series of wallpaper designed and created by local artists as part of the series SLIMTARRA.
Read here the review in art magazine 'Mister Motley' (only in Dutch...)
Read it in the Noordkaap Times!
Each hosting city will have its own accompanying edition of the Noordkaap Times, a newspaper that features columns, previews, feature stories, design sketches, and so on. In the first edition, which appears in conjunction with the exhibition in Munich, you’ll find contributions of artists Federico D'Orazio and Arturo Hernández Alcázar among other. Art critic Machteld Leij reflects on the way in which the Dutch art scene has responded to the rise of populism. And sociologist and political scientist Merijn Oudenampsen attempts to explain the rise of populism in the light of the work of political theorists Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau. During the exhibition, the Noordkaap Times can be bought at the whiteBOX for only euro 2,-
