ABOUT US

Noordkaap Foundation is an artist-run organisation based in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, that aims to respond to current issues in society through art programming and artistic strategies. One of Noordkaap's assets is the daring way in which it connects both regular as well as unexpected audiences to various expressions of contemporary art: conceptual, performance, interventionist, and socially engaged art projects. Noordkaap is bold, seductive, and highly critically reflective.

In addition to presenting its exhibition program, the foundation has developed a wide range of site-specific projects during the past six years, ranging from events on barren land and erecting temporary project spaces, to founding a creative cluster with artists, developers, and spontaneous actions and interventions in public space. Among other, the thematic programming focused on the role of art and subcultures in urban redevelopment, the side effects of the 'Creative City', the democratic use of public space, and the gelling together of new art activism and folk culture. Over the course of its career, Noordkaap has established a vast, interdisciplinary network of artists and professionals in the field, and acquired a unique position in the Dutch art scene.

Program 2011-2012: Researching the rise of populism in Europe

In 2011 and 2012 Noordkaap tours around Europe with a nomadic, traveling exhibition program to seven cities: Munich, Istanbul, Cologne, Budapest, Lisbon, Brussels, and Rotterdam. Through various activist and conceptual art forms, the influence of populist movements on Europe's diverse societies will be highlighted, challenged and researched. Precisely because of the program's complex, socially relevant themes, the foundation deems it necessary to incorporate an international pool of artists and institutions, who will closely develop and collaborate on projects, events, and various exhibition models. While some of the participants contribute existing work, others will spend time on location to research and/or integrate local phenomena, and apply their concepts and modes of working in response to the city environment, its inhabitants, and the exhibition location.
