Hans van den Ban

1950, lives and works in Amsterdam

Hans is a visual artist, who was originally heavily influenced by Fluxus, and primarily focused on sculpture over the course of the 80s and 90s. With projects like 'Klittenman' (Redux, Pakt, Amsterdam, 2006) he goes back to presentation methods from his early career.

His first intervention for Noordkaap was Fix No. 13, an installation made with chocolate-mouse foil in collaboration with Rufus van den Ban. In 2008, Hans was guest curator of the project Super La Tief.

For the European tour, Hans created the installation 'Hotel Europa'. A work that premiered at the opening exhibition 'Adios Holanda' (June-July 2011, Munich), and continues to travels to different cities with Noordkaap. "Another work especially created for the exhibition is Hans van den Ban's installation, in which eleven umbrellas carrying neon letters together form the words 'Hotel Europa,' with a flashing R. Hotel Europa is a hotel that loses its star, is the underlaying thought, the European dream falters and loses its shine." Source: Mister Motley, July 2011.

Katja, I agree with Zygmunt Bauman: because we can't slow down the enormous speed of change, let alone determine its course, we direct ourselves to (neurotic, puritan posturing about) things that we can influence: other people's cigarette smoke, too much sunlight, and unprotected sex... as far as I'm concerned we can add urban litter and poor maintenance to this list... such a better story, if you don't restore everything, and leave the streets mediterranean dirty... Fix No. 13 is a plea for this with sustainable litter.

See you tomorrow.
