Daan den Houter
Daan den Houter is a multi-disciplinary artist. He studied Artificial Intelligence for two years. After that, he decided to go to art school at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague.
He's well-known for his work Canvas Repaint, which he's been working on for almost ten years. Den Houter invites painters to make a work on this canvas, and when it's finished, it’s shown in the smallest gallery of Rotterdam, De Aanschouw, for only one week. After this week, the canvas is passed on to another painter who adds a new layer.
Den Houter's work examines the point of view of (daily) life assumptions. Sometimes by changing the common view towards an object, such as in Canvas Repaint, and Money Path, other times by changing the perspective literally, such as in High Tea Table. His work creates a new perspective that triggers to redefine one's first impression and reevaluate one's accepted assumptions. It creates a discussion about the work's own value, and the viewer’s opinion towards it.
During Noordkaap's European tour, Den Houter shows his High Tea Table (Riesenkünstlerstammtisch), and he created the work Money Path #1 in Munich (June 2011). In September 2011, Daan den Houter joins us again in Istanbul.
