Art van Triest

1984, Lives and works in Utrecht, NL

Art van Triest's installations are comprised of strong imagery, interactivity, and technology. In Cologne, Noordkaap presents part of his ongoing project Geweer (Gun). Geweer is a growing number of ideas for small, interactive installations. The ideas address the gun's identity as a tool.

The artist tries to create an experience that lingers on, something the audience will not easily forget. The image of a gun evokes a wide range of responses, from boyish pleasure to great disgust. It's an icon that sticks, it's photogenic, and it borders on cheap entertainment. The ideas and stories behind the installations are not deep and difficult, but are just below the surface. Van Triest on his project: “The content of these installations lies in what they achieve, what's the effect? Is it shocking? Is it amusing? And what does that say about the audience? The work does not take a position on guns, is not pacifist or violent, just pragmatic, and uses the image for what I want to achieve.

Art van Triest graduated from the Arnhem Institute of the Arts. Most recently his work was part of the Incubate festival in Tilburg, GAME CITY in Den Bosch, and International Day of Peace, organized by Peace of Utrecht, Pax-it, and Masterpiece.
